Finding the Best Mattress for Back Pain

Back pain is something that plagues millions of people around the world. With modern careers calling for hours spent sitting at a desk, the stress can take a toll over time. If you suffer from back pain, you might find that it’s hard to get a great night’s rest. Even if you think that your mattress is comfortable enough, there’s still no reason back pain should stop you from getting a full night’s rest. Here are some of our tips to help you find the best mattress for back pain in 2019.

Dealing with Lower Back Pain

Most people experience pain in their lower back compared to the upper area. For this reason, as you begin your search to find the perfect mattress for back pain, you want to find one that provides adequate support for the lower back. To put it simply, if your mattress is adding extra pressure to your lower back, you need to throw it out as soon as possible!

As you search, it’s important to note that firmness does not mean the same thing as support. A mattress with great support will keep your spine aligned and prevent it from shifting in unnatural ways. Keep in mind that your comfort is also important, so while firm mattresses can provide support, you might prefer something softer, and that’s okay!

Your Ideal Firmness

With the previous point in mind, most people suffering from lower back pain and experts agree that mattresses falling just above medium firmness are best for relieving back pain. Back sleepers especially prefer these types of mattresses as they avoid that feeling of sinking into the bed without any support. Even so, it is all personal preference, and if you sleep on your side, you might want a softer mattress that will hug and align to the shape of your spine.

Cooling and Airflow

While you might think that support and firmness are the only factors that will affect your pain relief, cooling and comfort also play an effect. Your body’s ability to regulate heat actually helps with blood flow and could be the solution to your chronic back pain. When your mattress traps heat, your blood flow is limited, and your cells can’t repair and regenerate. Look for a mattress that provides superior airflow, and try to avoid any that are prone to trapping in body heat.

You shouldn't dread going to sleep because your mattress is uncomfortable. Make sure that you shop carefully, and you'll be able to find a mattress that is comfortable and allows you to sleep all night long pain-free!
