Best Mattress for Cooling

Is there anything worse than feeling like you're sleeping in a sauna? Especially during the warmer months of the year, finding ways to cool yourself down while you sleep can be a challenge. You don't need to crank up the A/C just to get a good night's sleep! Here are our tips for finding the best mattress for cooling.

Materials Mean Everything

When it comes to finding the best cooling mattress, the material that the mattress is made from can make a significant difference. Aside from the comfort level and the support that the mattress provides, if you want to sleep comfortably with improved airflow, you need to pay attention to how the mattress is constructed.

The best cooling mattresses will allow air to pass through them smoothly and they won't trap in body heat. You should essentially feel like you're sleeping on a cloud of air rather than in a winter coat. Let's look at some of the materials that are best for regulating body heat.

Hybrid Mattresses

Hybrid mattresses combine all the benefits of memory foam and coils to create a perfectly cool sleep system. Hybrid mattresses often feel cooler than all-foam and traditional spring mattresses because the coils break up any heat retained by the foam. Hybrid mattresses are highly breathable and are a great choice for comfort in every season.

Innerspring Mattresses

Innerspring mattresses were once the only option available. As far as cooling goes, they definitely aren't the worst. Essentially, they're constructed with springs, air, and then plush top layers for comfort. Depending on the mattress, it might have more foam than others and could trap heat differently. Overall, an innerspring mattress will transfer heat effectively.

Memory Foam

Memory foam mattresses are incredibly popular these days and are known to provide superior comfort and support. One drawback of many memory foam mattresses is that they can trap heat in. The amount of heat they'll trap largely depends on the construction and the type of foam used.

Gel Mattresses

Many manufacturers will include a layer of infused gel in their mattresses to help with cooling and heat regulation. Commonly, you'll find that many foam mattress manufacturers will add this component to counteract the foam's inherent tendency to trap heat. The gel is meant to work like water and will absorb and dissipate the heat while you sleep cool.

The Cover Matters

You might not pay much attention to the cover over your mattress, but it can play a significant effect on the coolness of your mattress. In our experience, we've found that quilted covers will trap the most heat while non-quilted covers are more breathable. Also, non-quilted covers are more popular with mattresses that you can buy online and are generally more affordable. Also, keep an eye for washable covers - this will help you keep your mattress fresher for longer.

Cooling Fabrics

Finally, the last component that will affect the temperature of your mattress is the fabric covering it. Not all fabrics are created alike, so as you shop for cooling mattresses, you need to consider the fabric it's made with. Specialty fabrics you should look for include Celliant, Lycra, and Polyester. All three of these are common in athletic clothing and work to regulate your body heat and cool your body as you sleep.

With all of these materials in mind, it's important to remember that it's how these materials work together that matters the most. Look for a combination of fabrics, foams, and coils - like a hybrid mattress, that will match your comfort preferences. The perfect hybrid mattress will ensure you stay cool all summer long!
